How to take part in an auction in Egypt — step by step
From choosing the auction and ordering the terms booklet to viewing, paying the deposit, attending the session and what follows the sale — every step in order.
An auction is a fair way to buy an asset at a price set by competition. Whether the seller is a government body or a private company, the steps are much the same, and the reference is always that auction's terms booklet.
1. Choose the right auction
Follow the current auctions or the sector pages such as vehicle auctions, real estate auctions and scrap auctions. Each auction page shows its type (public or sealed bid), the session date, the viewing location and the list of lots.
2. Order the terms booklet
The booklet is the auction's official document: the asset description, the deposit, the payment dates and the collection terms. Order it from the site and it is delivered to you. If this is your first booklet, read what an auction terms booklet is.
3. Inspect the asset yourself
Auction assets are usually sold as seen, so viewing is not optional. Attend on the published date, check the asset and its papers, and ask about anything unclear before the session.
4. Prepare the entry deposit and documents
An entry deposit is normally required before the session, in the amount and form the booklet sets, and it is refunded to those who do not win. Prepare the documents too — proof of identity, or a commercial register and tax card if you bid for a company. Details in the entry deposit guide.
5. Attend the session
In a public auction bids are called out and rise until the asset goes to the highest bid. With sealed bids you submit a written offer in an envelope before the deadline, and the envelopes are opened before a committee. Decide your top price beforehand and stick to it. The difference in detail: public auction vs sealed bids.
6. After you win
If the asset is knocked down to you, you pay the balance and costs by the set dates, then the handover and title transfer are completed. Paying late can cost you the deposit under the auction terms.
Government auctions
Auctions run by public bodies in Egypt are governed by the Law Regulating Contracts Concluded by Public Entities, No. 182 of 2018, and its executive regulation, so their procedures and dates are published in advance in the terms booklet. M.O Group runs auctions for both the government and private sectors — register your interest to hear about each new one.
